In case anyone missed it, CNN sought out the user and then Andrew Kaczynski delivered this threat:
CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.
CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change….
The threat is that they will use their resources to publish the person’s name if he does not shut up. This is an attack on free speech. We now have a major news network who believes that only they deserve speech, and not others. In fact, they will determine who may speak and who may not all the while protecting their anonymous sources and unethical journalistic practices.
Shame on them. The network is in open war against our Natural Rights.
It is time we overturn Sullivan.
Update: It was only after CNN threatened the user that he apologized. This would be an apology under duress in the face of threats like: “it would be a shame for us to publish your personal information on our website and talk about you on our air if you don’t comply,” type of threat.
