We cannot but agree with JAG on the overall point, and we agree (mostly) with the talented writers who still are allowed (until they are summarily fired in the future) to write there. But the time has come for a new flagship. The magazine has become Schtick, like–cue the music bump–Coast to Coast Art Bell Schtick.
Say what you will about Ben Rhodes, but in this:
The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing.
He is absolutely right. If we wanted to be uncharitable, we might further question their intelligence. But no doubt many—perhaps even the majority of the NR kidlets—are actually smart. But they not only know nothing, they don’t know that they know nothing and don’t seem to be interested in learning anything. The conservative pundit career path now seems to be: college, summer fellowship at a magazine or think tank, internship, explaining the world. Badly.
We would add Jonah Goldberg to the mix too, unfortunately. Schtick is a character play and we hope that’s all it is, but even then it is irresponsible.
